What is the difference between a good and a bad hike?

I have never given much thought to the circumstances that qualify a hike as good or bad. At the end of a hike when I‘d return home, I would have had thoughts such as, “Wow, what I great hike” and “That didn’t go so well”. I’ve never gone deeper than that. But I’d like to, here and now.
